22nd May 2000

Hi all,
I'm not sure how many of you suffer from "the munchies" at work but I seem to get them all the time lately. It does not help that I work in a seasonal industry and at the moment things are pretty quiet, so therefore I have more time to think about just how hungry I am!

So what do you do to counteract this?

Do you surf the web? Possibly, but you can only do it for so long until some pompous member of higher management passes your desk and curtails your fun.

Do you tidy your desk? Possibly, but that can only be done so often and too often a tidy desk implies that you are not busy, which you cannot indicate even if it is true and everyone in the office suffers from the same problem.

Do you make up shopping lists? Possibly, but the consistent thought of which foods you need at home too often makes you think of the foods you don't really need to eat work, but want to anyway!

(Incidentally Aeros in our vending machine at work are 35p - 35p!!! I ask you!!!)

Do you spend time in quiet thought? You can try, but the peace will probably be shattered by someone dropping some metal shelving or (even worse) by someone's mobile phone ringing for ages and not being answered (please note that they are called MOBILE phones - they do not have to stay on your desk when you decide to go for a cigarette break you moron!).

So what does that leave you with? Yes, the puzzle page in the newspaper!

I am actually considering making it my new profession, as it seems you can get away with printing any old random nonsense as a puzzle and get away with it. I am not sure quite what the people who make these puzzles up do for fun, but I suggest they use their spare time and get a life. Try this crossword clue for size:

A desert's transformation vindicated. (8)

Huh? Now if that was dessert as opposed to desert I could at least cheat and try to fit in the words Roseanne (eight letters!) and Barr. Or what about this puzzle (which I will describe to you - believe me you will not want to see it!):

Look at the contents of box A and box B (random things shown in random boxes) - what belongs in box C?

I don't know, "The Green Mile" on region 1 DVD?

These puzzles are weird, far too difficult (not to mention strange) for normal people and need to be checked by editors so that some form or reasonable mind can look them over before unleashing them on the unsuspecting public!

Enjoy an exceptional period of seven days (4,1,4,4)!
